Alice’s Fancy Party Pictures

I think we can say that our house warming party was an incredible success. No one died, the cops only showed up once, and we only had one leaker.

Alice’s Birthday!
June 2010

Cleaning out(and wiring) the closet.

So here we are, in the new place on the isthmus, and the time seems to be flying. Some projects are behind us, with many more ahead. It is going to be an interesting summer.

Everything should be done by this weekend when our lovely roommate Alice is throwing her 50’s themed birthday party which we are hijacking into a housewarming party. Hopefully the landlord won’t mind what I have done with the place, but more on that later.

I have a ton of pictures from old adventures that I hope to have in the gallery as well as some shots of the place up this week, so check back. I should also have the business web pages up hopefully in the next few weeks, so keep an eye out for those. Ian has some reclaimed art that made it into a Habitat for Humanity show, which I had the honor of photographing and that will be up as well.

All the graffiti, none of the mess

Really cool when matched with some longer exposures.

SCCA Runoffs @ Road America!

Huge thanks go out to our new insurance agent and good friend Mr. Jim Rodman for scrounging up tickets to the SCCA Runoffs at Road America. Laura and I drove on up there and scoped out the biggest club racing event of the year and I was able to get a few snaps. You can check them out by clicking on the Polaroid. Enjoy!

PDXLAN: Pre Game Bawls Fortress

Bill flew in late last night and we crashed out after taco bell. Damn you authentic staff member that didn’t understand what we ordered…

This morning we went in to help set up at PDXLAN. After having positively too much fun with duct tape we decided to take the 5 pallets of Bawls and make a play fort. All I can say is that when this thing falls over and kills someone, it won’t be the corner that I constructed that does it.

And boom goes the dynamite…

Another 4th come and gone. I didn’t see anyone get maimed, but that wasn’t for a lack of trying. The people watching was good and this time I actually had a tripod for the fireworks. I also have some more pictures from when Nick and Xeng swung through town, and should have those up later this week.

Zoomified!

Things I have learned tonight:

  • Pink Guava Juice and Vodka go well together. <3 Fubonn
  • I was supposed to take the trash out today.
  • If your going to write a Wordpress Plugin have the decency to actually explain how it works.
  • Forget that Frenchie, Ill just use Shadowbox js.

Here is a 28 image panorama of Mt Hood.

Community Activism and EMS Response Time

Another year of Pedalpalooza has come and gone, and what good is a farewell party without a few death defying, jaw dropping, concussion granting feats of lunacy? (The spellchecker has Unicycle immediately under Lunacy by the way…) I could talk more about the event, but the 49 photos and one concussion (WEAR YOUR HELMETS KIDS) just about sums it up.

June’s Last Thursday on Alberta st.

I think that I am starting to learn the secrets to this Last Thursday thing. They are as follows:

  • Get to Alberta early for The Know’s Happy Hour. $1 PBR tall boys and Iron City Pints.
  • They will let you bring food in, I recommend the home made Polish Dog with Kraut and Bacon for $6.
  • At 7 the street has been blocked and Happy Hour is over. Hit the street!
  • Look for anything and everything out of the ordinary.
  • Get $2 Fries and a Tequila or Whiskey drink if you can find the dirty hippie house off Alberta.

Rose Festival Parade and Dragon Boat Races

Laura’s best friend from elementary school crashed the party Friday night and drunken Midwestern political discussion ensued. I am happy to report that no one sustained any life long injuries from the events that unfolded, although I am not too sure we can go back to the oyster bar for a few months. The next morning we all groggily awoke and dragged ourselves to the Rose Parade and Saturday market. Here are a few snaps…

Destroyers Gallery Up!

Little did I know that this was just to be the start of my day. I bike down to the esplanade only to see the bridges up and the Coast Guard escort flying by. Cruising down the east side of the Willamette I am looking over my shoulder trying to find the perfect spot. The pier I shot from yesterday was closed by on order of the harbor master so that was out. I ended up another 100 feet south this time and set up for the pictures you can see below.

In retrospect I wish that I would have saved some memory so I could take a few more shots of the Canadian fleet that entered after the USS Shoup. Send moneys for more memory cards people! While shooting I ran into the same gentleman who I shared space with yesterday. He was shooting with some old Canon glass, and was relishing the chance to pick up some image stabilized lenses. We were joined by another guy that was going up to Alaska to act as a summer guide for four months. He also had a D200 and was shooting bracketed shots. He expressed interest in my 70-300 mm lens, saying that he wanted to get more reach than his 18-200 mm lens. We swapped for a few shots and got to check out each others’ gear. The 18-200 definitely one upped my wide angle due to the extra reach and being image stabilized, but it overlaps too much with my telephoto to be worth it. With him going up to Alaska in a few weeks and the possibility of getting shots of animals that could have an interest in eating him, I recommended Nikon’s 400 mm 2.8 . It maybe large, but its speed and image stabilization would allow for a few shots before you have to run for your life. If all else fails it would probably make a great club.

A taste…

Here is a 3 image vertical stitch of the USS Shoup passing under the Steel Bridge. It is just under two megabytes at 60% quality and shrunk to 3200×4000 pixels. Clicking the ‘thumbnail’ below will bring up the larger image. Enjoy.

Rose Fest Fleet Week!

The Coast Guard ships Fir, Henry Blake, and Tern arrived today. Laura and I biked down to the esplanade and I snagged these photos. It was funny to see all of the tourists on the middle span of the Steel Bridge picking their butts waiting for the ships to come in and then watching them scurry to the sides when the warning siren blared. I hope to make it out tomorrow to catch the Arleigh Burke-class destroyer USS Shoup.

Last Thursday!

Found another event which I will have to be at every month. Man it is hard to find an excuse to hide in the apartment. There are three or four events every night this week. I seem to be spoiled for choice… Check out the Last Thursday Gallery in the Photo Repository.

Rose Festival Fireworks

What a never ending weekend. I learned a few things from these shots:

  • Watch out for suspected rednecks, they can ruin anything…
  • Shooting 1-4 second exposures from a vibrating bridge without support = bad
  • Shoot ahead of the firework and hope its a good one
  • Manual mode, manual mode, manual mode

Timbers!

This was the second game that we went to. It seems the awesome Thirsty Thursday portions are gone this week and we were given what looked like 10 oz beer cups. Everyone was walking around beer akimbo, but I had to limit my intake. I just didn’t have enough hands to take pictures and drink two beers at once.
There were all sorts of awesome at this game. A Timbers win with a penalty kick in the TWO minute overage(overtime) time, with the opposing team’s goalie drawing a yellow card for stalling. Those of us that didn’t crowd into the smoking holding cell outside were also treated to an Oregon Beavers rugby match at halftime.
There is a possibility that I know a may know a lady that knows a guy that could get me a press pass to get onto the sidelines for another game. This is still in the planning stages though. Here’s to hoping they are foolish enough to let me down there…

Lakeside Crawdad Fest Gallery Online!

Yep, we were minding our own business driving back home on the 101 when Laura saw a homemade sign about a festival. The bikes and cooler shifted in the van as she decelerated at a high rate of speed, putting the minivan into a complex maneuver which resulted in a 180 degree turn and our entrance to the Festival. We almost died that day, but damnit, Laura had never before experienced the joy of your very own pound of Crawdads!
It was a sight to behold. Three food vendors, a beer tent, the usual snake oil salesmen were there as well as the county’s only Cajun band. Check out our foodie and townie adventures by clicking on the Photo Galleries link at the top or this shiny new Polaroid.

No Nudity Allowed, but Enjoy Cheeseburger Porn.

Funny things floating around the RSS feeds today. Seems that no one likes naked people. Certainly it has it’s time and place, but taking the sacred right to play the naked point on the field is just wrong! Is Ultimate really worth playing if you take away our god given right to naked points, beer rounds, and Kevin Draeger style nudity. Ahh the fond memories of the Marti Gras tourney… I think I still owe him money… [Editors Note: I don't have a Facebook account and am not responsible for anyone silly enough to sign up for one...]

Additionally if you have a penchant for hiking wearing only hiking boots you may not want to tackle the Swiss Alps.

Now, you would think that if we are going to put Frisbee teams on probation and discriminate against those who absolutely hate tan lines that we wouldn’t respond so favorably to this sort of stimulation. Without further ado, I present my favorite food critic in the world, Padma Lakshmi.

I see you looking at me…

squirrel out my window

I don’t know what is worse…. The squirrel giving me funny looks, or the possibility of neighbors seeing a camera with a telephoto lens on a tripod in my window. EDIT: Click on the picture to view the new gallery format I am working on
